After reading [livejournal.com profile] copperwise's recent rant about Palin's complete lack of social awareness (or any type of awareness in general--after all that talk about Alaska not being the middle of nowhere, Palin does a pretty poor job of showing proof of it otherwise in her words -_-;), when she wrote, "JSP literally means 'the blue collar guy who picks up a six pack of cheap beer every night after work and goes home to watch Nascar (and probably beat his wife/kids and light a cross on the black neighbor's lawn but we won't say anything about that wink wink nudge nudge).'"

It reminds me of a National Guard commercial I saw when I watched The Dark Knight in theater. Kid Rock played an appropriately patriotic song about freedom and liberty while scenes of brave, American soldiers patrol, train, and retrieve the soccer balls of neighborhood, foreign children (Hey, we might have big, black machine guns, but we're not here to kill anyone!). It was suitably impressive and inspiring, when all of a sudden, Kid Rock wails, "Freeeeeedooooommmmm!" and BAM! Nascar race cars race across the screen. [livejournal.com profile] darkestnight12 and I were shocked silent from out praise of the previous scenes. What on Earth does racing a machine have ANYTHING to do with freedom? Or the National Guard? Did one sponsor the other or something?

Wow... I'm getting dragged into politics despite my will--one thing to thank the absolute impossibility of Palin for I guess! XDDD

Actually there is a National Guard car in NASCAR. I can't remember offhand if it's in the Busch or Sprint/Nextel series, but they do have one. Personally, I rather thought it a nice touch to that ad, but then again, I'm a fan of both military and NASCAR. /shrug

I'm not sure that her comments should necessarily be taken as insincere. Where I am, I would judge that about 80% of my customers come into the store sporting shirts, hats, and or jackets boasting their favorite driver or racing team, of my neighbors easily 75% of them spend their Saturday and Sunday afternoon/evenings sitting back and watching a race.

Oh, that makes MUCH more sense.

Hmmm... Maybe it's a difference in environment? In California, I rarely see anything related to Nascar beyond the model cars in the toy aisle. Personally, while seeing the crew and all rush around at every pit stop is mondo-cool, watching cars go round and round a circular track with the occasional, possibly fatal crash doesn't really appeal to me. XD Each to her own, I guess!
