Happy Belated Thanksgiving, everyone! Hope you are all still gorging on the leftovers and still glowing from family drama. ;D

...For about four full days.

My Cyrillic-reading buddy had a family emergency and had to cancel, so I'll be visiting the Southeastern port-city of Vladivostok myself. I'm learning basic Russian right now online and hastily looking up sights to see. I still have yet to find a street map big enough to print though. T_T

This is a city that opened for tourism fairly recently in 1992, so I've my fingers crossed that there will be some maps available for purchase. Also hoping it's not dangerous as my pessimistic nature is imagining.

Thank goodness for couchsurfers who live there, speak English, and will hopefully be able to meet me for a coffee sometime during my stay.

Wish me luck, everyone! I fly out tomorrow morning from Incheon International.

First, I finally decided on where to go on summer vacation and managed to convince my school that no matter what, I WILL take a week off.

I'll be going to China from August 5th through the 16th. My friend and I are hoping to avoid taking a tour, so has anyone traveled China without a tour? My friend's Caucasian, and while I can understand Cantonese, I can't speak much, read, or write it.

In thanks for you reading this, watch some crazy cool video a friend linked me to:

You often resist any cravings or urges that you have, but sometimes you give in, however you are sensitive about what others think of you. Your concern about rejection and ridicule cause you to feel shy and uncomfortable around others. You are easily embarrassed and often feel ashamed. Your fears that others will criticize or make fun of you are exaggerated and unrealistic, but your awkwardness and discomfort may make these fears a self-fulfilling prophecy. You tend to feel overwhelmed by, and therefore actively avoid, large crowds. You often need privacy and time for yourself. You tend not to express your emotions openly and are sometimes not even aware of your own feelings. You feel superior to those around you and sometimes tend to be seen as arrogant by other people, however you believe that a certain amount of deception in social relationships is necessary. You are guarded in new relationships and less willing to openly reveal the whole truth about yourself. You take your time when making decisions and will deliberate on all the possible consequences and alternatives.

Saw it in the popular hangout area near my neighborhood in Seoul: Rodeo Street, Cheonho. About a 30 minute walk from my apartment.

My friend is very talkative. XD We were eating post-dinner ice cream cones and just wandering the street. The Garfield is always out, promoting a cat cafe that's located in an odd location. The Luigi is new since I last visited the place, but he was promoting a new DVD bang (room) place. It's habit for me to look for Garfield whenever I'm at Rodeo Street now. He was really cool and I took a picture with him too!

I don't know how I managed to miss this, but one of my favorite authors, Ciceqi aka Sleeps With Coyotes aka Ladonna King took her fic down in 2009 to concentrate on her original works. Unfortunately, I must've missed this news and didn't get a chance to save my favorite fic from her. If anyone saved any of her works, I would really appreciate it.

In particular, I'm looking for...

  • Good Omens - Aziraphale/Crowley - Form and Function: "In His image" takes a turn for the weird, and the Dragon of Eden has his work cut out for him.

  • Highlander - Duncan/Methos - Hush: Methos discovers an Immortal child still in the womb. He takes refuge in the Highlander's dwelling. Accompanied by lovely art.

Thank you to anyone who can help!

Let's get over the bad first:

Americans who hate on Japan because of Pearl Harbor during this natural disaster should remember Hiroshima and respect life no matter the nationality or ethnicity.

You have no right to talk about Pearl Harbor if all you know of it is from the movie. Before you go around saying cruel, hurtful things, due to the strength of your reaction to that film, please watch Hayao Miyazaki's Grave of the Fireflies. There are innocents involved, always, and people often had no say in what their leaders and authority decide upon. Keep also in mind that governments change with time, as do opinions.

And some balm for us all:

I scoff when writers describe their characters as plain, then go and give them green or blue eyes. In what world is blue or green eyes plain? Brown eyes, brown or black hair, are the key norm. It's genetics: darker features will normally override recessive genes like blue eyes, blonde hair. When your character is blonde, blue-eyed, and self-described scrawny, I begin to think Mary/Gary S(t)ue. Also, you know how the largest continents/countries in the world (China, India) have mostly brunette populations? Exactly.

I finally realized The Oatmeal is actually more than one comic and explored the archives. Here are some of my favorites:

Also, flying to Toyko for ten days tomorrow! If any of you guys on my flist are in Tokyo from Jan 22-Feb 2, please please please message me because I am all by my lonesome since my travel buddy's finances couldn't handle it and she dropped out. I am very silly, since all my venting is done through the written medium, and easy-going! And, if you ever come to Seoul, I can return the favor! ;)

The comment limit to Inception kink_meme baffles me. So many anon writers who can no longer continue posting because of the stupid limit. Worse, for besotted readers, as the writers are anonymous, we can't even find a journal where it might've been reposted because, oh, ANON CAN'T COMMENT WITH THE LINK.

If the only purpose of the limit is to control prompting, the downsides of it are NOT worth it. Seriously.

I've reserved a ten day stay with a English-speaking family near Ikeburo, so I'm going through with my trip to Tokyo, despite my travel-buddy dropping out due to a family emergency. The problem is, I was depending on her visiting her favorite hang out places as I tagged along. I'm sure some of you who read this have visited Tokyo before. Anything I should see when I'm there? The ten days should allow me to thoroughly explore Tokyo, so the next time I'm there, I can head over to the Kyoto-Osaka-Nara area instead.

Itinerary so far:

* Studio Ghibli Museum
* Fish Market (Aunt L's almond candy)
* Mt. Fuji day trip
* Shinjuku + Shibuya + Omotesando areas
* Harajuku and buy some leg warmers to keep you warm during winter.
* Ueno Park
* shop at Loft (cool stationary store), Mishokoshi dept. store, Takashimaya dept. store
* Ginza has a lot of dept. stores with food basements. Try all the local chocolate shops too. Go to Zoff and have glasses made in 30 mins. for about $50-70 each pair. (Check out designs offered at dongdaemun beforehand.)
* Food-themed museums (http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3035.html)
* Akibibara: maid cafe/yaoi <3

Food to eat:

* Fresh, hot okonamiyaki!
* Taiyaki from the street
* Signature crepes?
* wagashi (out of season?)

Experiences:

* Brave an onsen
* wear a yukata/kimono/some kind of traditional dress
* Watch/take part in tea ceremony

Hope everyone online had a wonderful Christmas and is still feeling the holiday cheer!

Over in Korea, a group of friends in my area (Gil-dong in Gangdong-gu) arranged a potluck and a Yankee Swap. On Christmas Eve, I watched Gremlins and Die Hard 1 with a few friends in my officetel. John McClane's reputation is deserved and I felt more stupid people should've died in the other movie. My Christmas morning went like this:
  • 3:oo am - go to sleep

  • 11:00 am - wake up XD

  • 12:30 pm - hop onto subway

  • 1:00 pm - after one transfer, arrive at Costco

  • 1:00 pm ~ 2:00 pm - Wait 30 mins for 2 rotisserie chickens, hunt down the marshmallows so a friend could make her candied yams, and grab 4 bottles of sparkling cider. As this is Korea, everything ended up 37,000 won, and the marshmallows were the most expensive

  • 2:30 pm - drop off foodstuffs, grab my gift for the Swap

  • 2:45 pm - open the cider, relax/convo/games/carols with good friends

The next day was Christmas for the West Coast in the States, so I Skyped home and ended up watching presents get opened, spoke the most Chinese I'd ever spoken in 5 years with my grandparents, and enviously watched my sister eat three kinds of dessert. It was roughly 4 hours and for the family Christmas picture, my sister held her laptop up while I looked a the camera through my laptop camera and smiled hard enough for my cheeks to hurt. Who needs care packages when it's obvious I'm loved? <3

The next day, I found out my friend who I was going to spend my vacation in Tokyo from Jan 22~ Feb 2 with had to use her vacation funds for a family emergency and would not be going with me. Still ridiculously happy, but now worrying a bit how I might navigate the Tokyo subway by myself. XD

Merry Christmas everyone, and have a Happy New Year!
