Such truth!

And for the times when you just want to cry and find yourself a nice hole to die in: http://www.givesmehope.com, where people post stories about the better part of humanity.

All you McShep fans know about Keira Marcos and her incredible, sensual and snappy fics, right? She'd tweeted that the next part of Ties That Bind might be done on Dec 1, and every day since then, I've have almost compulsively checked her site for the promised update. Sad, innit? It's because her fic is just. That. Good.

Rant of the moment: DEFIANTLY =/= DEFINITELY. No way, no how.

So I FINALLY got around to printing my free birthday scoop coupon for Baskin' Robbins at work, since I don't have a printer at home, but when I got of the bus and walked the walk, the store was dark, the doors wired shut: they had closed up shop permanently. T_T I'd also printed out three of the $1 off Cappuccino shakes. They're all absolutely useless now. Not to mention, the two "free pints for a pint of blood" I have from some blood drives. I'll probably ask my parents when they come up to drive me down town to cash them in. If I take the bus, I'll come home with a pint of sweet soup. XD

On another rl note, [livejournal.com profile] snahjerblah has moved out, though her name's still on the lease as she looks for her replacement. The apartment looks so much larger and emptier now! The bathroom is practically bare of all things! Except for some Nyquill, which I think she left behind 'cause I've never used that brand in my entire life before. She also forgot her toaster and for some reason, one of her soup bowls. Where on Earth could a soup bowl be if not the cabinets or the drying rack?

There's been some responses to the Craig's List post she put up and I must remember to interview these people. They need to tell me why they're looking for housing a bare week before the new school year begins, bring at least one reference who isn't family, agree to my "no pets, no boyfriend without warning" rule, and be willing to share the living room and bedroom due to crappy wireless. Then there's the issue of formalizing it with the apartment management, getting some kind of safety deposit, changing the internet from [livejournal.com profile] snahjerblah's name to mind, and slowly moving some of my stuff back home. All this on top of finalizing my schedule for the fall.

There's a fashion illustration class that I've been absolutely DYING to take, but even though I'm already registered for it, my advisor informed me that there are THREE (enormously stupid) graduating seniors who need the class for their majors. As the class limit is 22 or so and isn't required for my major, there's a strong possibility I'll be booted off. I don't want to drop it without attending at least the first day--maybe other people might have dropped out? I'm a senior too! T_T I don't know my chances of getting into this class in the next two quarters because there's a possibility of time clashes for the remaining three design classes that I need for my major. T^T

Still, at least I got into the English class I wanted: ENL 149--Homosexuality in Literature. *fistpump*

On a Gaia-related note, I've opened an art shop!

I'm currently obsessed with this song and kind of wary of it. When V was visiting this past weekend, they enlightened me that many of the songs I like to sing along with are filled with innuendos. It was also that same weekend where we went for Italian in celebration of my b-day/V's last day in town and I discovered that sourdough bread with olive oil is DELICIOUS. I love it so much, I went to Savemart and brought a loaf today since I couldn't have my Pistachio scoop.

Heh, at the urging of the same two friends, I also got a cocktail called Celeste, a mixture of Irish creme, blueberry vodka, and chocolate, with my pasta. I hate vodka with a passion ever since my parents went to happy hour at an Embassy Suite and took one of everything back to our room. I'd hoped everything else would change it, but no, I wasted $9 on something that tastes like the dentist would give you. In the end, my friends told me to start small, with wine coolers. I've already tried beer, vodka, rum, champagne, wine and tequila. I could only tolerate the champagne. I'm interested in trying port, brandy, amaretto, and gin, hoping that at least one of them will be tolerable.

On a fandom related note, I have recently reignited my passion for Jeeves and Wooster fic thanks to [livejournal.com profile] triedunture recent swag of great fic. I have also... *pauses for dramatic effect* ...DISCOVERED A NEW FANDOM.

OMG, y'all need to check out Generation Kill. It's a HBO mini-series based on a book of the same title that takes place during the first Iraq war in 2003. It's about the United States Marine Corps' 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, who are the Marine's version of the Navy SEALS. As in, some very hot, very capable men and in particular their commander, Nathaniel Fick (who has also written his own book!) and Sergent Brad Colbert. The latter's nickname is "Iceman" and looks like a modern day Viking. Or he's played by an actor who looks like one anyway. XD [livejournal.com profile] hackthis has written a whole SLEW of stupendous AU fic, but the one that got me into this in the first place was [livejournal.com profile] tevere's Sixteen Days in September, also an AU. [livejournal.com profile] romanticalgirl, [livejournal.com profile] shoshannagold, [livejournal.com profile] sparky77, and [livejournal.com profile] alethialia have also written great fic.

So, uh. Rambling post is rambling? ^^;;
animeartistjo: (*shakes head*)
It's rather sad when fanfiction have been beta read and I STILL spot many, great, gaping errors in the writing: huge, obvious ones like "your" for "you're" and fragments that don't really add any impact to character voice or atmosphere at all.

In RL, V, a pal from HS, is visiting! There's not much to do in Davis at ALL, but we managed to all get the annual free t-shirt at the first home game of the season and it's beautifully designed. I got to see the new stadium, but instead of staying for the game, we went to a popular sushi buffet and gorged ourselves. Afterwards (and before, actually, after we'd gone to the farmers' market), we played many, many games of Bang!, an Italian creation featuring cowboys. Last night, when V arrived on the bus, we ate at Crepeville, they of the delicious Fuji salads and garlic potatoes. After which we (surprise, surprise) had ALSO played Bang!. I prove to be a poor player with a few brief moments of brilliance. I died early, if not the first, every single time.

So, uh. Happy birthday to myself since it's 2:13 am already over here. Later today, we'll go bowling and play pool (billards, snook, whatever) at the campus's game center, have lunch downtown, and then walk V to the Amtrak. Fun times. It's all there is to do in our little college town!

It's cool, I already celebrated the four-day, Labor Day weekend before, when I'd returned home. I got to see all the people important to me and got awesome gifts from my parents. Dad got me a portable external hard drive (500 GB, Digital Western) from Costco, and Mom and Aunt L took [livejournal.com profile] darkestnight12 and I shopping at the Macy's in S.F. Unfortunately, Dad's right arm, which he was supposed to be resting, got worse after his weekly gym visit. Of course, swinging a badminton racket like he does (aka, hard enough to de-feather the birdies and break the strings sometimes) only exacerbates what has only JUST begun to fade. It was so bad before that he had to drive one-handedly. Scary. Now he's back at work and supposedly taking it slow and easy. Kind of hard when you're the only day custodian of an entire elementary school. I've seen first-hand the kind of messes those kids leave and the kind of heavy lifting he's expected to do. Argh! Stupid Asian macho-stoicism. He has more leave time available!

Rec wise, I had spotted a gorgeous piece of fanart [livejournal.com profile] darkestnight12 had bought from Fanime when I was home. So, uh, if you guys like kind, cool pretty boys who aren't loners by choice with a lucky cat bodyguard who can see traditional Japanese spirits, read Natsume Yuujinchou. If you love CLAMP's XXXholic, you'll adore this series. It's a lighter, sweeter version.

Glee's version of Take a Bow was breathtaking and heartbreaking:

And [livejournal.com profile] pandarus does a mighty great job in crossing it with Supernatural and a wee bit of Buffy/Angel. Though it is a wip, it is highly amusing and makes so much sense!

Then there's the always dependable cracked.com, who have distilled the books to their barest bones and even rewritten the screenplay.

I split my sides laughing.

Goodness, I've been spamming this journal lately.

But, spent an hour at the Apple trailers site and now I want to watch, in no particular order:
  1. Band Slam (dork-in-love and MUSIC!)

  2. The Cove (DOLPHINS! BEING EXPLOITED! In JAPAN!)

  3. The Proposal (Sandra Bullock! Being funny!)

  4. OMGOMG HAYAO MIYAZAKI HAS ANOTHER FILM: PONYO. August 14th cannot come soon enough.

  5. Fame (MOAR music)

  6. The Way We Get By (The freakin' TRAILER made me tear up)

  7. Coco Before Chanel (COSTUMES <333)

  8. Kambakkht Ishq (because musical cliches will never grow old--just hope there'll be subtitles)

  9. G.I. Joe (NINJAS. That is all.)

Seeing the trailer of Shorts makes me wish Robert Rodriguez never directs another film ever again. And didn't they ALREADY make an Evangelion movie? The plot seems to be the same. Public Enemies had hot guys in neat suits, but that's not enough to carry off the lame plot. Plus, Chistian Bale's accent is annoying and Depp is beginning to look like he has only one kind of character acting. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and The Last Air Bender disappoint me beyond words. How COULD they? *weeps*

But I stumbled upon a great new manga. It's actually a Korean "manwha" if you care for the difference, but the art is incredible and this is KUNG FU WIN. A little cliche, featuring a bullied school boy learning kung fu to stand up for himself, but the parallel story line about the various korean martial arts schools (mafia!) linked to the boy through his undercover teacher makes thing very interesting. Fanservice for men AND women, incredible! Most male characters are incredibly ripped and a lot of them are dressed in sharp, tailored suits. What more can a fangirl ask?

Unfortunately, The Breaker is only sporadically updated. There are, however, three volumes already translated!

If you guys are anything like me, with parents who raised her with old Chinese classics, or just love awesome physical feats, check out this incredible Thai movie, Ong-Bak. It was painful listening to a language pretty much like Vietnamese (as in very shrill, high, whining tones that are as far from musical as linguistics can get), but the director. Man, the shots are INCREDIBLE. There's the inevitable slow-mo, but the main actor? He's the Thai version of Jet Li and Jacki Chan. He's the REAL DEAL. If you have access to a projector, try to rent this and watch it on as big as a screen as you can. I watched one of the most intense fight scenes where the hero and his skeezy side kick of a friend are chased through the streets by thugs on a lecture hall sized screen for my film history class and it was BREATH TAKING.

NEW FANDOM that is so full of awesome that I cannot give any measurement. BBC's Merlin with the hottest Prince Arthur in just about FOREVER and the subtext is so prevalent it's like OBVIOUS. *squishes the two boys* Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] elandrialore for writing an A/M fic to get me into this in the first place. My current source is [livejournal.com profile] merlinxarthur and at the rate this fandom is growing, I have a good feeling it's the next big thing. Maybe even bigger than Torchwood! XD

Also, the engineering office got their logo-printed sweaters this week and my roommate, the peer adviser got me one. They're like, official school gear and ONLY $20. XD I'll walk into my upper division English class tomorrow wearing an Engineering sweater, because it's now cold and wet enough that my normal jacket just doesn't cut it.

Also, everyone should read Kuroshitsuji (aka Black Butler) because not only is the art GORGEOUS, but the story is INTERESTING.

One thing I don't understand about the common fears homophobic people have. How on Earth does being homosexual have ANYTHING to do with being a pedophile? No homosexual man I've ever spoken to would EVER give a child sexual advances and they find such things just a repugnant as everyone else (except for the pedophiles, of course).

Also, sexuality only affects who you're attracted to and who you would date--nothing else in everyday life. Honestly, would a heterosexual man just jump a female co-worker from unrestrained lust? No. So neither would a homosexual man randomly jump their male co-worker.

I seriously don't understand people sometimes. -_- Especially the Christian activists who view homosexuality as a deviation to hate. Love before all, yeah? And seriously, everything should be taken with a grain of salt and a good healthy dose of common sense. Times have certainly changed since the Bible was written--shouldn't the faith evolve to follow suit? But then that would be fanaticism and that's blinder than bats.

On a brighter note, I have discovered Elisa Viperas's Friendly Hostility, which is an online comic that has been running since '04, I think, and is AWESOME. Like in LMAO AWESOME. I highly recommend it and while the art appears simplistic and strange, it's very easy to get accustomed to and I ended up loving it.

New fandom.

Got bored while working on art homework, needed something to keep awake and after stumbling upon the incredibly skilled [livejournal.com profile] smutcutter's videos, I watched Ocean's 11 online, praying it would be better than the dull 13.

It. Was. Awesome.

The plot was so much stronger and meshed so well together than 13 I can't believe 13 was supposed to be a sequel! Well, actually, I can in that the plot's was essentially the same when stripped to the bare bones, but 11 was so much better executed!

Oh yes, about that new fandom. Danny/Rusty/Danny love! They're both hot, both charming, and get along so well with each other, even when at odds!

I'm so glad it appears that other writers have long discovered this pairing before I. Googling "ocean's eleven slash fanfiction recs" got me many, many results.

Oh, and my positive/negative interiors turned out so well, I sprayed the fixative on immediately.

Now, it's 5 in the morning and I must nap! Bus leaves at 8:40. XD

Shock. Awe.

Yay! Technician van outside the apartment complex when I got off the bus today!

Besides this momentous news, today was also the first day of winter quarter. I had three classes today and I think I can handle my workload this quarter.

First was Spanish 1 at nine in the morning, meaning that I'll have to catch the 8:30 bus every morning for the next three months. The professor had lots of energy so despite the early hour, I think I'll stay awake throughout class. I was, however, expecting an actual professor and the woman who showed up was a grad student. I'm a little disappointed because the name on the register had great reviews on ratemyprofessor.com. Then I found out that since I already have two years of high school Spanish under my belt, I can only take this class pass/no pass. Terrible, as my GPA could definitely use the A I could get. Since there's no letter grade, I'm going to concentrate more on my other classes and just make sure I don't get below a B here.

Next was English 137N with a professor who had just a hint of an Irish accent. He spoke rather fast though, and combined with the dim, warm room, I know that if I don't watch myself, I'll nod off. Today however, we watched a pretty cool music video the professor said illustrates Yeats' "Stolen Child" nicely. It was Sigur Ros's Glosoli. Haunting foreign music with spectacular scenery and some eerie, but gorgeous children.

Last, after a three hour wait, was English 46A where the professor read the entire syllabus aloud and gave us a twenty-minute briefing on the English language and the history of Great Britain. It appears that Anh, one of my high school friends is also taking this class, but since I was never really more than acquaintances with her, we didn't speak.

I'll have Spanish again tomorrow, then my first day in English 45. After that will be discussion sections for my lower division English classes and I'll be home free!

I'm currently doing my Spanish homework and before I sleep, get a head start on Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness. I hope you're working your butt off too, [livejournal.com profile] darkestnight12, you with your piddling AP English and multitude of ART classes! Grrrr...

Edit: Nooooo! I was too late! By four minutes! Now I won't ever get my Harry Potter as James Bond fic! Nooooooo~~~! Curse the time zones! Curse theeeeeeemmmmm!

Copy+Paste my next chance at [livejournal.com profile] slashfest...
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Harry/Draco
Summary: Harry Potter as James Bond! Draco Malfoy the mysterious femme fatale! Hermione or Ron as M or Q(the guy with the cool gadgets if I got the name wrong)! Harry's top, please and bonus points if Ginny's the villain.

Well, there's always next year... T_T Then, I will also request PotC with Norrington and Gillete. LMGriffin's spoiled me.

I read Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi for my COM 4 class and the movie's out! I watched the commercial and OMG, this may be one novel adaptation that the entertainment industry might not have slaughtered! Then again, I think the film's independent and it IS based on a graphic novel, so the images should have guides. I can't wait! >.<

Another Batman movie is in the works! The Dark Night hasn't a very clear trailer yet, but it's Christian Bale and Morgan Freeman, and it's BATMAN, so pleasepleaseplease be good.

Alvin and the Chipmunks seem to be a sweet view, if not very plot-based. Then again, adorable animations of talking chipmunks, which is only one step away from Disney, so...

Has anyone watched August Rush already? I'm a sucker for amazing children, even though the plot's not plausible at all and Robin Williams plays some sort of stereotypical country music star character.

The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything! Veggie Tales! Afkrdnakajf!!!11!!1!

Wall-E looked very sweet, too. If the directors live up to their reputation, I'm definitely seeing it. Forget about chick flicks, I go for action and children's fluff. XD

Also, on a less related topic, I'm thinking of buying a new laptop. I'm getting more and more afraid that this one will just not allow me to log in one day.
