Where are you located at? Most graphic design places in the US are in the New York, LA and San Francisco area. I don't think they would go much further outside their own area to look for interns.
You might have better luck looking up interesting studios on your own and emailing or calling them. Also, don't knock the secretary type job...sure it is not an art position, but you will be at a place where you can meet and talk to a lot of people. In many ways a successful arts career depends on good networking. Give it a shot!
