We hate the things we fear, as in "I hate spiders!" or "I hate the dark!". This is just my opinion, but I think some men become aroused very easily, and if they orient as straight but find themselves aroused by or near or because of another male, they feel threatened. Thus, "I hate gays!" I think this is also why you don't find as many homophobic women. For one thing, it's perfectly acceptable for women to touch one another in public, sit close together at the movies, go to the bathroom en masse, even sleep in the same bed (as when sharing a hotel room), and no one bats an eye. My cousin dabbles in journalism, and he once published an article about the lengths men will go to in order to avoid appearing gay. It was humorous, but it sure made you think.
