They don't even sound alike!
Aug. 25th, 2008 11:03 pmPeople (talking to all authors without beta-readers!), "defiantly" is NOT "definitely". They don't sound the same, they aren't spelled the same, and they mean completely different things.
I was reading a perfectly well-written fic (okay, almost perfectly well-written) and then, "Snape was defiantly one of his favorite teachers now." Argh. *facepalms*
Also, ellipses are rarely used in everyday writing. Chances are, a comma or period should be used instead, and in fiction, the use of too many ellipses in the dialogue makes the speakers sound like they can't complete their own thoughts. It's also not the proper usage of it. I'd always assumed it indicates the passage of time, but dictionary.com says it is the "the omission from a sentence or other construction of one or more words that would complete or clarify the construction, as the omission of who are, while I am, or while we are from I like to interview people sitting down," or, in printing, "a mark or marks as ——, …, or * * *, to indicate an omission or suppression of letters or words."
On an unrelated, but just as angry tone, I completely overexposed a roll of film while developing it today. The lid to the tank hadn't been fully secured (myfaultmyfaultsostupid!) and the reels insides slide out. My reflexes were good enough to salvage most of the bottom roll, but the top one was hopelessly exposed to white light. I could see maybe one and a half of the negatives that I ended up with. It made me incredibly sad, too, for the roll was all pictures of my parents, who'd come up yesterday. They knew I had been sick, so made the trip even though I'm a terrible host and they only ended up staying for a grand total of perhaps three hours.
