Poi dancing
Dec. 4th, 2007 03:01 amSo I was reading a fanfiction featuring Hawaiian poi. The exotic name and the joke the author made with clex and Martha Stewart piqued my interest. I googled it. And besides the soupy looking food item, something else came up.
I remember a talent show my intermediate school had held because of an act put on by a group of Asian eighth-graders who I had highly admired. It's sad, but I have long forgotten their names as I never contacted them again once I entered high school. They were spinning these lights on long, stretchy strings in the black light-lit gym so fast that the after-images left luminous designs trailing the the air all around them. The fast paced performance, combined with the deep beats of their music mesmerized me. They were completely confident in what they doing, faces impassive in concentration and executing wild, break-dance moves while their wrists flicked and their arms whirled these lights all around.
I looked up poi dancing on youtube and besides some strange rave dancing videos, this showed up. It wasn't as crazy as what I had the great pleasure of witnessing, but this performance has its own impressive grace.
It's just a notable coincidence that I found out what my upperclassman those many years ago were doing when I wasn't even looking.
On a wholly different topic, I love the month of December. While some people might hate them due to hearing them all day at work, I adore listening to Christmas carols. As I'm on my laptop more often than not nowadays, I tune in to streaming radio online rather than listening the actual fm. There's actually fewer commercials on the one I'm currently listening to: Christmas Melodies. Previously, I was listening the a UK station, but the songs were starting to repeat and there were more commercials.
